All Dog Rescue
- Finding Life-Long Homes for Rescued Dogs -
August 2008 - Callie's new mom sent an update on their wonderful girl:
I thought I would let you know how Callie is doing, can't believe we've had her for 4-1/2 months already.
She is doing pretty well overall but still struggles with lots of fears. She is still much more hesitant
around males than females, and still afraid of Jim. We now have Jim feed her exclusively and he is the
only one to give out her favorite treats. He is also the one doing obedience training with her. She is the
star pupil, walks like a champ on the leash, sits and stays beautifully! When we try to have her lie down,
you would think she'd been beaten, she cowers and looks so scared. The instructor just keeps saying some man
was very mean to this beautiful girl. All the experts tell us that it could take a year or more for her to
really feel comfortable around Jim. Some days she is amazing, she will crawl up on the couch next to him
and put her head in his lap, even when I am home. She sleeps with me on the bed during the day and sometimes
at night she will slowly leave her dog bed and jump up next to Jim and look at him as if she expects him to
tell her to go back to her bed, he doesn't of course and she will then curl up next to him. I wish she could
just talk to us for 5 minutes and we could set her straight!! Everyone we run into wants to take her away,
she is so sweet and loveable. Our daughter's friends are fighting over which one gets to come over and help
us with her during the RNC as Jim and I will both be working 7 straight 12 hour days and poor Callie will be
alone too long. We are actually considering getting another rescue dog, she loves it when other dogs come
over to play. I thinks she could use the canine company. We are in no hurry though, we want her to completely
settle in first. We went on a short vacation in July and she stayed at Goldwood Kennel. She had a ball,
loved playing with the other dogs.
Callie's first update is below:
I can hardly believe how far Callie has come in just 10 days, especially
with the hernia surgery thrown in there. She is still a little hesitant
around Jim but is warming up a little more each day. She and I go on at
least 2 walks a day for about 2 - 3 miles each time. She loves it as
long as we don't go under the bridge on I35E, that freaks her out! She
has adjusted to our daily routine well, and lets me sleep during the day
for the most part.
She still doesn't play much with us, she still startles easily but is
now starting to follow me around the house and is exploring a bit. She
has gone for a ride in the car almost every day and seems to enjoy it
now (the first few times she was very hesitant).
I can tell that she will settle in and think of this as home real soon,
I thought it would take much longer.
Thanks so much for taking such good care of her.
